Mass differences reveal binding energy.

A nucleus contains protons and neutrons bound by the residual strong interaction. Its mass is less than the sum of its separated nucleons; the deficit corresponds to binding energy through E=Δmc2E = \Delta m c^2.

Binding energy per nucleon rises toward iron and then slowly falls. That shape makes fusion of light nuclei and fission of very heavy nuclei capable of releasing energy.
